Educação visual para a cidadania: um estudo comparativo em contexto escolar

The survey is based on two important issues, on one hand, the relevance of a directive education for values and the practice of a democratic citizenship, on the other hand, the contribution of arts in general, and visual education in particular, to the consolidation of this purpose. In what concerns to the first issue there seems to be a general agreement, specially at an academic level. Referring to the second one, although the acknowledgment of the arts in education is recognised, there are still few scientific studies that prove and certify the peculiarity and the potentialities of using arts as an alternative way for a citizenship education.

This work was based on an investigation and performance to a just to our needs, i.e, to make an experimental work that would give us in first moment a close connection with people involved in this matter, which would be the object of support and analysis. Thus we called out a comparative study between two classes in first years of High School in EB 2,3 de Vila Pouca de Aguiar in what concerns the subject of visual education. One of these classes (Experimental Group) consisting of 26 students was involved in a pedagogical experiment programme during two school years (2002/03 and 2003/04). The other one (Control Group) consisting of 27 students, was used as a reference to the comparative analysis through questionnaire applied from time to time.in society. One the other hand, we also concluded that the citizenship learning overpasses the limits and the responsibilities of the school space. It’s possible to learn citizenship in several contexts through our life, although the school one is the most important in what concerns to this subject.
